It’s All About The Journey … Your Neighborhood School Profile: Dolan Middle School

 

Dolan Middle School was founded in 1948 (the year the first polaroid camera went on sale!), and is located on the border of Springdale and Glenbrook.  Dolan has evolved over the years from a traditional junior high to its more recent middle school curriculum model.  Like the City of Stamford, the school is diverse in its racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic student population.  Many students have more than one language spoken at home, and a high percentage have one hour of Spanish instruction included in their daily schedule.

Dolan offers numerous programs – The Scholar Academy, Dolan DASH afterschool program to name a few.  There is upcoming production of “Shrek the Musical Jr.”, Dolan Baseball Team is City Champion 2016.  Go Raiders!

Students participating in the Dolan DASH program will receive academic support and homework help in literacy and math, then break into enrichment clusters of their choice.

The mission of Dolan Middle School is to educate all students to the fullest extent of their individual talents and abilities. To that end, they provide a safe, nurturing environment that fosters social, emotional, and physical health. The school’s instruction focuses on the acquisition of skills necessary for students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and communicators in our rapidly changing technological society. It’s All About The Journey … Your Neighborhood School Profile: Cloonan Middle School

 

This middle school has been recognized by College For Every Student (CFES) as a “School of Distinction” for its programs to promote student mentoring, community service and college-path emphasis.  Cloonan is the only school in the country to receive this national honor seven years in a row!

Located in the Mid City section of Stamford within close proximity of downtown setting the school’s urban vibe, with its economically and ethnically diverse community.  Cloonan is a short walk to downtown, making for easy access to what our great City offers and allowing students to enrich their learning experience through relatable field trips. The school also backs up to Scalzi Park which gives access to wonderful playing fields. In fact, the Bulldogs ended the 2016 campaign a perfect  7-0, they also defeated New Haven TWICE. What a FANTASTIC accomplishment … 9-0 … Congrats !!!

Cloonan offers numerous programs to the students.  Scholar Power Series, after school STEAM Academy, after school clubs, intramural competition in eight sports and participates in the Special Olympics plus music and arts programs.  Cloonan also participates in many community service projects, and their student-designed anti-bullying program has become a model adopted across the country by CFES.

Cloonan science teacher, James Forde was honored by the White House, being selected as “Champion of Change for Computer Science Education” last year.  He is a former Stamford Public School’s Teacher Of the Year and an active science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education advocate. The school was also home to the famous Stamford egg-drop experiment where students’ goal was to find a way to keep an egg from cracking  after being dropped from a fire truck ladder. This annual event was orchestrated by former teacher Sal Buchetto who was best known for his “Pop-up” style of science education, in which he strove to make the material he taught pop up off the page, favoring experimentation over textbooks. These are just 2 examples of the innovative teaching that takes place at Cloonan.

Stillmeadow elementary School is nestled in the residential neighborhood of Westover.  Stillmeadow employs Positive Behavioral Instructional Support programs to build a positive school culture.

At Stillmeadow, collaboration exists between administrators, teachers, parents, community, and students. This partnership helps to provide all students the ability to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful and lifelong learners.  Stillmeadow is a school where each child is treated with dignity and respect, and children are taught with the future in mind. Staff ensures that each child has the opportunity to be happy and successful every day.

Stillmeadow also participates in instructional data teams (IDT) to analyze and monitor student performance. Through these analyses, teachers identify student strengths and weaknesses, discuss strategies and determine a plan of action to increase student achievement. The IDTs, along with the School Governance Council, focus on district and school goals and initiatives to update the School Improvement Plan annually. In addition, the literacy coach and math liaison provide continuity in the reading and math programs by planning and participating in staff development. Student intervention programs include Leveled Literacy Instruction, Recipe for Reading, Read180, and Read About.

After school programs include tutoring, chess, recycled art, and other recreational programs.

One of the most outstnading features of this school is Twin Meadows, a boundless playground.  Bright colors, wheelchair accessible bridges and ramps, and tube slides make this playground a fun place for any child. When a Stillmeadow family had difficulties finding a playground where their twin daughters could play together – one of their daughters suffers from quadriplegic cerebral palsy from birth, they decided to build a boundless playground. The idea came to them after reading about another boundless playground in West Hartford. At Twin Meadows, there is something for every child. High back and seatbelt-equipped swings allow children with physical disabilities to swing next to children on typical swings.  This playground opened October 2003 assisting and educating students with special needs, and it’s been the pride and joy of the school since then.

It is Springdale School’s new slogan –  Respect, Outstanding effort, Acting safely and Responsibility.

Springdale Elementary School is a true neighborhood school in a close-knit community.  The Springdale neighborhood is known for its own distinctive character & convenience:  walkable streets, a bustling commercial village with various stores, restaurants, a movie theater & a  Metro-North station.

This school is rich with history.  Did you know:

  • Springdale began as a one room school house in 1855.

  • In 1895 there was a girl’s entrance and a boy’s entrance.

  • A new school was built in 1904 (see below) and the original school was moved and became part of the second story of a house now standing on Weed Hill Avenue.

  • Children used to take the trolley up Hope Street to get to school.

  • In the 1800’s children used to play a game called “Kitty Over” at recess. One team would throw the ball over the building and if someone from the other side caught it before it bounced, he ran around and tried to tag someone to bring him back to his side. The game continued until no one was left on one side.

Springdale has a diverse student population and offers a variety of experiences that reach out to the school’s community: Literacy Volunteers Program, Family Fun and Learning Nights, Springdale Neighborhood Clean-Up, and the Spring Community Art Show, just to name a few.

Springdale’s academic support initiatives include Readers and Writers Workshops, the Everyday Mathematics Program, Authors in Residence Program, Musician in Residence Program, Junior Achievement Elementary School Program, Chess Program and Lego League Program, among others. Partnerships, such as those with the Pitney Bowes Corporation for a tutorial program or the Stamford Museum for an inquiry-based science programs, also assist the school’s educational efforts.

Springdale has been recognized by the State of Connecticut as a “School of Distinction,” and is one of Connecticut’s most improved schools based on Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) performance. The School has also been recognized by the Fairfield Lone Pine program for exemplary student achievement.

It’s All About The Journey … Your Neighborhood School Profile: Northeast Elementary School

Northeast Elementary School is located in North Stamford and has approximately 625 students. Northeast is a Responsive Classroom Leadership School that focuses on integrating social skills with academic skills and school wide discipline through use of district leaders, a school-wide discipline policy, all-school meetings, and all-school field trips. The Responsive Classroom Program also includes Morning Meetings, Academic Choice, Guided Discovery, Rules and Logical Consequences, and Home School Communication. Enrichment and remedial programs are also provided.

The school is close to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, the Stamford Historical Society, and the Bartlett Arboretum. These institutions offer unlimited opportunities to the students at Northeast School. Students are exposed to the arts through direct instruction in the performing and visual arts, vocal and instrumental music, and art appreciation through a cooperative relationship with the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Northeast has a large bilingual program for Spanish-speaking students and is the home of the district’s elementary Hearing Impaired Program. The school encourages everyone to attend the Signing Celebration in the spring when the entire school demonstrates their ability to use American Sign Language. Northeast also puts on an annual school-wide musical and other cultural based events.

It’s All About The Journey … Your Neighborhood School Profile: Newfield Elementary School

In the quiet residential neighborhood of Pepper Ridge in Stamford,  you’ll find Newfield Elementary School – with approximately 625 students.

Newfield is a Responsive Classroom Leadership School that focuses on integrating social skills with academic skills and school wide discipline through use of district leaders, a school-wide discipline policy, all-school meetings, and all-school field trips. 

 

According to the principal, Lisa Saba-Price,  Newfield has a strong focus on engaging our community this year, and very excited about their new partnership with Neighbor’s Link.  Students are learning at their own pace and are given the time they need to succeed and develop deep knowledge of subject matter. Newfield School staff works diligently to provide new ways for students to grow stronger socially and academically. This school strives to ensure each and every moment enables our students to enjoy learning and become strong 21st century learners.

 

In April 2015, KidsGardening.org officially announced that the Newfield Garden Program had been selected as a WINNER of the Jamba Juice “It’s All About the Fruit and Veggies” Garden Grant. Thirty youth programs were selected from over 400 applications for this year’s award!

 

Student have won numerous academic awards as well as art and writing contests. Community organizations present informational programs to various grades throughout the year. Student Council is a vibrant philanthropic organization that serves the community by collecting funds, food, and other items for those in need. The school also has a mentor literacy program whereby individuals from the community meet with students to support learning as well as offer individual attention.

The School Improvement Plan is focused on increasing reading and math proficiency in all grades. Roxbury also participates in instructional data teams to analyze and monitor student performance. In order to build and maintain a positive school climate, Roxbury has adopted Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a system that is focused on improving student’s academic behavior and behavioral outcomes. It’s All About The Journey … Your Neighborhood School Profile: K.T. Murphy Elementary School

K.T. Murphy School has successfully served the Cove community for more than a century. The school was originally known as the “Cove School”,  a one-room schoolhouse located on Weed Avenue.  (The original structure, now a private home, still stands today.)  In 1893, Katherine T. Murphy was hired as a teacher at the Cove School and was appointed principal in 1913.  She remained as principal until her retirement in 1948, for 35 years!  The name “Cove School” was changed to its present name “The Katherine T. Murphy School” in February, 1946. The school went through expansion & renovation over the years and K.T. Murphy reopened in 1990 after the last renovation, an integral part of this historic neighborhood.

 

K.T. Murphy today has approximately 550 students, strives to create a learning environment that encourages and enables each individual to reach their academic, social and emotional potential. K.T. Murphy is a Responsive Classroom Leadership school, which focuses on integrating social skills with academic skills and school wide discipline through use of district leaders, a school-wide discipline policy, all-school meetings, and all-school field trips. K.T. Murphy has also enjoyed a partnership with GE Capital for more than 15 years. Over the years, this partnership has provided students with many special opportunities such as a pen pal (ePal) program, one-on-one tutoring, field trips, and many classroom and school wide activities.

 

K.T. Murphy Elementary School  welcomed new Principal, Sherri Prendergast this year.   Prendergast is a Stamford native who has worked in the Stamford Public Schools for 24 years.  She began her career as a kindergarten teacher at K.T. Murphy.  In her welcome letter, she expressed her commitment and  excitement of coming “home” to the school.  She mentions KT Murphy has always been a school where forward thinking is at the forefront.

The Responsive Classroom Program also includes Morning Meetings, Academic Choice, Guided Discovery, Rules & Logical Consequences, and Home School Communication.

Stark also employs Positive Behavioral Instructional Support programs to build a positive school culture. Stark provides many after-school programs including Audubon Club, Broadway Kids Club, Dance, Hands-on Science, Animal Embassy, Sports Clinic, Computer Club, and Young Mariners.

          High expectations, a rigorous standards-based curriculum, and adherence to best practices create an environment to support student achievement. The staff collaborates to improve student achievement and foster a caring, safe environment. The school is also committed to family-school partnerships. The PTO sponsors many educational and fun events for families. The School Governance Council works to improve communication and enhance family engagement.

Stark participates in instructional data teams to analyze and monitor student performance. Through these analyses, teachers identify student strengths and weaknesses, discuss strategies and determine a plan of action to increase student achievement. Students in grade 1-5 are invited to attend a before-school program to receive small-group reading intervention. After-school extra help in mathematics is also provided.
