It’s All About The Journey … Get Over Yourself, Turkey, You’re Not All That

Though the turkey may be the unofficial star of the Thanksgiving table, it seems to rank last in the official “Top  10 Best Classic Thanksgiving Dishes”.  Read on…

Some people say turkey is delicious. These people are wrong.

One school of thought is that we eat turkey at Thanksgiving not because it is the tastiest poultry or the easiest to cook, but because the bird’s large size allows us to feed many hungry people all at the same time.

In fact, baking a turkey is a labor-intensive exercise that requires time and practice to do well. Yet most American households only bake one turkey per year. This is why most Thanksgiving birds used to emerge dry and bland, often requiring the saving graces of gravy. If it weren’t for decades of tradition, you would have been hard-pressed to find a household that wouldn’t mind skipping the messy process of prepping and baking a cumbersome turkey. Today, there are so many options available that turkey has become more “user friendly” whether you purchase a pre-brined bird or just a turkey breast, it’s hard to go wrong!

9. Corn bread  cornbread

Simply the best of the breads, all of which otherwise fail to crack the top 10. Corn bread strikes a harmonious balance between sweet and savory that can complement just about anything. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that rolls are an OK carbohydrate substitute. Don’t be fooled.

8. Green bean casserole

green-bean-casserole
A relic of post-World War II efficiency, the humble green bean casserole was created in the mid-1950s by the Campbell Soup Company. It is a comfort food in the truest sense that accomplishes the improbable: It makes icky green beans palatable. Such innovation is why the casserole has carved out a place for itself in the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame.

7. Mac and cheese

mac-and-cheese
It has been brought to my attention by my colleagues here at The Week that many households do not indulge in the gooey, al dente perfection that is homemade mac and cheese. To which I say: Are you people insane?

Try it with  jalapenos and add pancetta, which anecdotal evidence suggests is always a worthy contribution. There are never leftovers.

6. Mashed potatoes

mashed-potatoes
You can load them with garlic, bacon, cheese or infuse them with rosemary-let your imagination run wild! You can fashion mashed potatoes into a bed for your turkey, or sculpt them into a concave vessel for gravy. Such versatility is truly American, and should be celebrated as such.

5. Ham

baked-ham
Ham is moist, flavorful, textured, and requires little work to do well. It is the inverse of turkey. Simply rub with brown sugar or bathe it in cola — preferably both. Ham is as underrated as its cousin bacon is overexposed.

4. Sweet potatoes with marshmallows

Fun fact: Sweet potatoes are a near-perfect health food. They are packed with Vitamin A, B6, and fiber — and can help you lose weight. Realistically speaking you probably won’t — especially with a fluffy bed of marshmallows layered on top. But it’s a comforting thought.

3. Gravy

gravy
The gravy boat is the most sought-after dish on the Thanksgiving table. A thick, hearty gravy can save even the blandest of meals. Think of it this way: Would you rather have a carving of turkey breast without gravy, or no turkey at all? The answer should be clear.

2. Stuffing

stuffing-2
Turkey merely provides a cavity for stuffing, Thanksgiving’s true centerpiece. Stuffing is a reward, akin to delectable candy packed into a tasteless Butterball piñata. Stuffing is so good, in fact, that we willfully eat it out of the rear end of a dead animal.

1. Pie

pecan-pieapple-piepumpkin-pie

Perhaps you are a pecan pie person. Or maybe pumpkin is more your thing. Apple pie is sublime. All are excellent choices. Each slice is an edible, triangulated vessel for whipped cream, or, if you are ambitious, ice cream. Need to excuse yourself and change into sweatpants? Sure thing. Because … pie.

Pie is the light at the end of the tunnel, the reason we push ourselves and “make room.” Each bit of flaky crust filled with nature’s caramelized sugar is a testament to human perseverance. Pie is a triumph.

Enjoy your day and those you celebrate with – Bon Appetit!

It’s All About The Journey … Summer (and year-round) Buyer Wishlist

Here a few things people are looking at during their home search.

With the information highway right at our fingertips, the majority of buyers are doing tons of research before they ever meet with a Realtor.  They are looking for good school systems and low neighborhood crime among other criteria. Most of the time, buyers’ minds are already made up on where they want to be, so it takes an experienced agent to help keep them open minded. Let’s see what we can they want!

Geography

Buyers tend to gravitate to areas and neighborhoods that have a great sense of security. They want an area that has little to no crime and is safe for loved ones-both human & furry.

Another priority is convenience. People like to be near amenities whether it’s the gym, golf course, pools or beaches as well a variety of activities and events happening throughout the year. Easy access to shopping and commuting options are important as well.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Resale value is always on a potential buyer’s minds, (yes, even though they haven’t even put in an offer!). Whether the buyer is looking for a “turn-key” property or are willing to invest some “sweat equity”, how their investment will treat them when it comes time to sell is always important.

People rely heavily on the internet to search for homes which make the presentation crucial. Things that can help influence and draw in buyers are staging and pictures – you know that “pictures speak a 1,000 words” – make sure yours make the statement you want them to make!

The Clock is Ticking

Real-estate maven Barbara Corcoran says,  “… if you are looking at dusty two-month-old listings, isn’t it like eating leftovers?”  The answer is – sometimes.
Usually the reason a house sits on the market is because it is not priced to the perceived market value. A good house finally coming to the right price can be a great value!  When people are looking to buy they are looking for good value.

I hope this is helpful, and if you’d like to discuss marketing your home, feel free to contact me and put my successful track record to work for you!

It’s All About The Journey … Keeping Things Cool

You may not always want to pack up and head to the beach, especially with a big family.

Is getting a Pool or Jacuzzi a good investment for you?

Let’s look at both the benefits and down sides.

Making a Splash at Number One …

Family time is the number one bonus  – splashing around is an activity everyone can do together and have fun! Beaches can be distracting and don’t really give you the same feeling as relaxing at home and enjoying time with your family and friends.

Next … Stress Relief

Having a pool is one of the most therapeutic things anyone can ask for. Being able to have a gym and tranquility all in one can be the best!

A pool can be a great enticement to get out of the house on a hot summer day and move around – whether it’s swimming, aerobics or just some good old “Marco Polo”. It helps get the kids moving helping to counteract all the indoor time during the winter when they tend to spend more time on video games.

Does a Pool Add Value to Your Home

Is this a good investment? The answer is – it depends. It depends on the market and the buyer. If you are in an area where the majority of the homes have pools, and are selling high, than it may increase your  appeal, but at the end of the day it all depends on who your buyer is and what they are looking for.

Are You Creating a Money Pit?

This can be what a lot of potential home buyers think of when they see a pool in the back yard and don’t understand what the actual costs of maintenance are. They may see the entertainment possibilities, but also think about the associated liability.

It’s important to educate people on what they can expect and what maintenance can run – usually about $3,000 to $5,000 a year.

At the end of the day there is a 50/50 chance that a pool will enhance the value of your property. Pools are a lot of work, but can also be a great source of enjoyment.  If you want one for your own pleasure – dive in!

This is for the food lovers. What’s better then a dream kitchen … outside!

Here are some examples of great outdoor kitchens and how to make your own. Guys will love this because the grilling options are fantastic and they will feel like they are a gourmet chef.

Safety First

Before you start decorating you want to make sure you choose quality craftsmanship. Make sure you pick equipment and counter tops that are built for durability to protect your investment.  HGTV says when choosing counter tops you want ample space and that 24″ to 36″ counter depth is the bare minimum. When choosing a style, go with a high end stone! It won’t stain, retain odors or fade in UV sunlight.

Time to choose the floor

When choosing your flooring consider foot traffic, spills, rain, wind, ice and fireproof materials.

Stone, concrete and tile are the best options. Stone is pricey but gives you a natural look and a feel of elegance. Concrete will give you versaitle durability and is good for cold weather climates. Tile is the most affordable option and can give you many different looks.

Last but not least the appliances!

Choosing the grill can be the most fun, and the most challenging aspect of your new kitchen. A few things to consider:  a side burner is always a bonus,  you can make /heat sauces or boil water while you’re grilling;  how about a pizza oven, you can have it custom made or purchase a DYI kit; an overhead vent is important, especially if you are cooking close to the house.

Other appliances to consider: a sink can be very functional, how about a refrigerator/beverage cooler to keep food and drinks fresh and at hand and don’t forget about storage-builtin drawers & storage can make life so much easier!

Whether or not you add a dream outdoor kitchen enjoy the grilling in this season and make use of their wonderful yards.
